Improve Productivity And Reach Your Goals Quicker With Good Time Management Techniques

Adopting good time management techniques is really important especially when starting your own online business. Trying to juggle a million balls in the air, learning new skills and getting your business off the ground can run you ragged.

Learning how to manage time is a process. I won't pretend that it's easy. It does take effort and perseverance but when you get a handle on how to manage time, you'll really start kicking goals!

This article deals with some basic time management techniques to help you gain an understanding of how you currently work. Once you understand how you manage your time you'll be able to adopt the time management tips in the other article in this section. The idea is to work smarter not harder.

  1. Keep A Log

Write down everything you do for 5 days. This will give you a good feel for what tasks are taking up most of your time. Now I know there's the temptation to think that you'll remember everything! But believe me .. it all becomes a blur especially when you're flat out trying to cope with competing priorities.

    A Few Tips

Try to find a balance between too much detail and too little. Use a diary and block out sections of time for regular events eg sleep, meetings etc and then break the rest of your diary down into 15 minute chunks. Don't forget to include the number of phone calls you make and/or receive!

  2. Analyse Your Time.

Total up the amount of time you've spent each day per activity - allow 5 minutes per phone call and calculate the percentage of time spent on the different types of tasks eg project work, meetings, telephone calls, time-wasting activities etc? Have you been in crisis mode all week? How much time have you spent on tasks that will bring you closer to your goal? I'm sure you get the picture.

  3. Understand Your Time Management Habits

According to Stephen Covey all tasks fall into 4 main quadrants and can either be classified as urgent/important or non urgent/unimportant. Have a look at the diagram below and see where you fit in.
